This seminar describes post-growth effects that improve the colour of diamonds, a treatment which gemologists refer to as “colour enhancement” of diamonds. From a physics perspective, it means transformation of optically active defects that absorb light in the visible region of the spectrum. The basis of this lecture is a result of the author’s original research on the transformation of optically active defects in diamonds, with the addition of data from other authors. Two main methods of influencing the structure of single-crystal diamonds are described – irradiation damage and high-temperature annealing, which provide almost exhaustive possibilities for managing defects in diamonds.
VIKTOR VINS, PhD, ScD, Is CEO&PRESIDENT of LLC VELMAN, Novosibirsk Scientific Center in RUSSIA. After graduating from the Physics Faculty of Novosibirsk University, Viktor is engaged in research on the properties and high-tech applications of single crystals of laboratory-grown diamonds. He is the author of over 100 scientific articles on the engineering of atomic defects in the crystal structure of diamond and the production of diamonds with predetermined properties.
