This guide presents properties of the most common natural, treated and synthetic blue gems using 6 portable tools and instruments:
- Microscope- to inspect the internal world of gems
- PL Inspector/Jewellery Inspector – a mini-UV lamp to observe LW and SW fluorescence & phosphorescence of loose & monted gems
- Portable polariscope /CPF (Cross polarised filters)/StrainView to observe birefringence patterns in crossed (at 90 degrees) orientation
- DOVE – based on deep UV light (approx. 220nm) allowing for simpler analysis of diamonds and gems with comparisons with LW UV.
- InSpectrum – compact spectrometer (Gemetrix) able to record both VIS (visible) absorption and PL (Photoluminescence) spectra.
- EXA PL spectrometer (MAGILABS) to record emission spectra on 4 blue diamonds of different origins which are included in this booklet.
