No previous gemmological education required

Instructor: Branko Deljanin, B.Sc., GG, FGA, DUG

Dates: March 10-11, 2022

Workshop at CGL Canadian lab or conference room at United Kingdom Building, 409 Granville street, Vancouver, Canada.

DAY 1 (9.00am-5 pm)

Introduction
Chemical and Physical properties of Diamond.
Optical properties and internal and external features.
Natural and synthetic gems used to simulate Diamond.
The use of loupe and microscope in diamond grading.

Colour
International grading systems for grading colour
Fluorescence and influence on color grade.
Using Master Stones to grade colour.
Grading colour on loose diamonds.
Grading colour on mounted diamonds.

Cut
The Round Brilliant cut – facets and angles – how this cut affects appearance.
Old European cut – how this cut affects appearance.
How cut in general affects appearance – reflection and refraction.
Explaining the cut grade, ie. symmetry, proportion, table size, etc.

LAB: A DEMONSTRATION OF USING THE LOUPE, MICROSCOPE, COLOUR MASTERS
IN OBSERVING INCLUSIONS, COLOUR AND CUT.

DAY 2 (9.00am-5 pm)

Clarity
How clarity affects appearance and durability.
Explaining clarity scale and description of each grade.
Explaining clarity types, ie. Inclusions (knot) and blemishes (cavity)..
Finding major grade setting inclusions.
Examining the stone for surface characteristics.
International grading systems for grading diamonds

Carat weight
The introduction of the metric measurement.
Estimating the carat weight of diamonds by
measurement and formulas, estimation of mounted stones

LAB: A DEMONSTRATION OF GRADING . STUDENTS TO HAVE EXERCISE
ESTABLISHING WEIGHT OF MOUNTED DIAMONDS.
AFTER 1 DAY PROGRAM STUDENTS RECEIVE LETTER OF COMPLETION.
