Description

Guy Borenstein – FGA
February 21st 2023
“Laboratory-Grown Diamonds – Screening Challenges”

In recent years, lab-grown diamonds have become increasingly difficult for gemologists to identify. The industry media repeatedly covered dozens of undisclosed lab-grown diamond issues, demonstrating the increased prevalence of these goods and fueling consumer awareness. In this presentation, we will cover the visible and non-visible unique properties of both origins, the common screening technologies used for separation, and, most importantly, each technique’s limitations and blind spots. This is a “must-attend” session for all gemologists, appraisers, and jewelers concerned about potential undisclosed lab-grown diamonds in their business and using screening devices.

Guy Borenstein, FGA EGG, is Stuller’s Senior Gemologist leading the company’s comprehensive diamond screening and gemological testing operations at the company’s global facilities. Besides directing fully-equipped gemological laboratory operations, Borenstein’s other responsibilities include developing screening protocols for all diamonds, conducting training of associates, and researching for new screening and identification solutions. Before joining Stuller, Borenstein served for 15 years in various gemological capacities, including Chief Gemologist in two gemological laboratories, VP Gemological Services in Gemewizard, FGA Gemmology Diploma tutor at Gem-A, and consultant to numerous institutes and companies worldwide.
